Our newborn weighed under two pounds.
He almost didn’t seem real.
It was a dream come true when we found out we were expecting our first baby.
Until one night in my second trimester, when I started having contractions.
We knew it was way too early, so my husband, Pat, rushed me to St. Boniface Hospital. I’ve never been so scared in all my life.
Within a few hours, I was in labour. Our baby was coming three and a half months early, and there was nothing we or anyone else could do to stop it. We were living a nightmare; far removed from our dream of becoming new parents.
He was immediately attached to a breathing machine, because his tiny lungs did not work on their own. We couldn’t bear the thought of losing our baby Owen.
Fortunately for us and our entire family, Owen started his life with a team of the best doctors and nurses on his side, in St. Boniface Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. They worked tirelessly to keep him alive.
When he finally came home in February 2017, Owen weighed almost four times his birth weight. The nightmare was over.
Right now, as I share this story with you, Owen just turned one year old. We’re so excited to be spending our first holiday season together in our home.
